About Pappy Barrel Fermented Cigars

The Pappy Van Winkle Barrel Fermented cigar is a 100% long-filler, premium cigar made totally by hand in very small batches at Drew Estate in Estelí, Nicaragua. This historic cigar features a “barrel fermented” “tapa negra”-style wrapper over a Mexican San Andres base wrapper, as well as aged Nicaraguan Filler tobaccos, personally selected by me. It is the perfect choice for pairing with any of the Van Winkle bourbon and rye products.

The strength level of the Pappy Van Winkle Barrel Fermented cigar is “Medium Plus,” which allows both new smokers and experienced aficionados to enjoy the blend. It’s a well-rounded, sophisticated cigar, with body and a hearty expression. At Drew Estate, we are known for passion and innovation, and making premium cigars is our ‘raison d’être’ [reason to be]. The Pappy Van Winkle Barrel Fermented premium cigar is truly a showcase of our passion for cigar-making. These cigars are sold exclusively by Pappy & Company.

A Letter From Jonathan Drew, Founder of Drew Estate

Friends of Pappy Van Winkle Cigars by Drew Estate,

I would like to send a very special thank you to each of you who've believed in this project from day one. I know that we were late as hell on the first batch of the Pappy Barrel Fermented Cigars and recognize that we ran out of stock before they even reached the Van Winkle Headquarters in Louisville. Some of ya didn't get a chance to snag some. I know this, and I'm sorry. Trust me; I even have a relative who is still pissed off cause he didn't get a chance to make history with us on the first production run.

But don't worry; As I'm sitting here scribing this letter to ya'll, something amazing is happening. A select team of Drew Estate rollers are hard at work in Nicaragua, crafting 100% by hand, the blend that changed everything. Yes, the 2016 Barrel Fermented Selection is underway, and the report from the front line at "La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate" is a good one. The cigars are turning out beautiful — identical to the 2015 batch from last year.

Before I go on, I'd like you to take a moment to think of this: Here's your friend JD, just a local shmocal craft dude, who's got a bit of a knack for making pretty good cigars. In comes the Van Winkles with an opportunity for my team to work with them on this historic project. I have to tell ya, that sometimes I really can't believe it myself. "Is it really real, JD?" I ask myself. What the heck is going on? Why did they choose us? Quite frankly, I have a lot of questions myself. But the most interesting thing is how truly down-to-earth and kind they've been to our team and to everyone who knows them. I really respect this family. So, to the Van Winkles, saludos, cheers and most of all, thank you for blessing us with this opportunity. Please know that we truly value it.

So let's get to some of the cool sh#% we did in 2015 together. Our Kentucky Barn Smoker event, featuring a tobacco barn fiesta in good ole Hopkinsville, KY was an absolute extravaganza. We had Julian Van Winkle, his wife Sissy, and daughters Carrie and Louise with us in the barn. More than 300 cigar and whiskey aficionados enjoyed a beautiful day with us. Together, we raised $27,000 for Cigars For Warriors, which is the prestigious charity who's sole purpose is to put premium cigars into deployed troops hands. By the look on Julian's face while he toured the barns and learned about the time-honored methods of fermenting tobacco, I have a feeling that they'll be back with us again in October 2016.

Another memorable day was visiting the Van Winkles at their new headquarters in the NULU district of Louisville, KY during the holidays. If ya know JD, ya know that I love bourbon, food and planning  so I had a hell of a day. I think I shocked the triplets when they greeted me at the door and witnessed my gold teeth, though, haha.

I'm looking forward to returning the favor and having the Van Winkles with us in Nicaragua at Cigar Safari. (That's what we call the three night, four day tourism trip that we do each year at the factory.) It's pretty epic to watch a Pappy Barrel Fermented Cigar being rolled right before your eyes at our majestic factory.

So, what's in store for 2016, anyway? In addition to the Toro and Robusto sizes that we featured last year, we have a new size to offer ya. It's kind of a classic, called Churchill  7 x 48. It's ridiculously divine. I'm anticipating that the first batch of all three sizes will hit Pappy & Company around mid-June. So you know the deal, please don't get stuck paying more than $100 per stick on the internet aftermarket, because you didn't act timely. Pre-order your cigars here, on pappyco.com, today. Unless, of course, you are that pain in the a** relative of mine that I mentioned above. I'm not sending him this letter.

Best, JD
