The Michelada


We don’t know the exact science behind it, just that the flavors of Bloody Mary Mix seem to complement a variety of spirits to produce a seemingly endless array of delicious craft cocktails. Naturally, you have the quintessential Bloody Mary, a brunchtime favorite for a very good reason, a tequila twist on the Bloody Mary with its tangier cousin, the Bloody Maria, yet there is also a lesser-known option that rounds out the big three: a Michelada.  


 Perhaps because beer isn’t traditionally considered a spirit used for craft cocktail concoctions, but anyone who enjoys a Shandy knows that is an unnecessary oversight. A Michelada is quite simply, Bloody Mary Mix with a light beer and a little bit of fresh lime. Somehow light and refreshing, for a base that is comprised of bold, juicy, and intensely flavored with tomato juice and spices, the light beer cuts through, and fresh lime lends a splash of bright citrus.  


 An origin story as clouded as the deeply crimson hue of the Bloody Mary Mixer it originates from, the Michelada is more commonly referred to as a “Mexican Bloody Mary.” Likely tied to the phrase, Mi Chela Helada (“my cold beer”), it could be a cocktail that has evolved from imbibers who enjoyed a splash of hot sauce in their beer (see, we aren’t the only ones who think that hot sauce goes with everything).

 Just as the Bloody Mary signifies a convivial gathering, typically brunch, and is served as a morning cocktail, the Michelada, too, is part of an important ritual. It is an invitation to gather with friends and family, and simply enjoy. We love a Michelada, crafted with our Bloody Mary Mix with Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon Barrel-Aged Pepper Mash on a warm summer afternoon, after working in the garden or just welcoming the arrival of Pappy Hour with friends on the porch. 


 The flavors of our Pappy Van Winkle Bloody Mary Mix, with bright, zesty, and juicy tomato juice, smoked sea salt, and of course, the signature notes of Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon Barrel-aged flavor, are an ideal flavor combination with light beer. Spicy, salty, and with subtly sweet undertones, the fresh citrus and tang from light beer combine for a delightful and surprisingly refreshing summer cocktail that ushers in the promise of the following season.

Michelada

A surprisingly refreshing twist on a classic Bloody Mary, the Michelada combines a cold, crisp, light beer with the savory sweet heat of our Bloody Mary Mix with Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon Barrel-Aged Ghost Pepper Mash and a twist of fresh lime juice. A delightful summer cocktail or a new favorite for brunch, the flavors of Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon Barrel-Aged caramelized peppers, sweet charred oak, ripe tomato juice, and savory spices combine for a deliciously layered Michelada! For even more Mexican inspired flavor, give your Pappy & Company Tall Tumbler a Tajin rim and for more signature heat, finish with a dash of Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon Barrel-Aged Pepper Sauce. Finish with your preferred garnish, we recommend celery sticks, olives and a lime wedge.

Ingredients

  • Bloody Mary Mix with Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon Barrel-Aged Pepper Mash
  • 1 light beer
  • fresh lime juice and a lime wheel
  • Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon Barrel-Aged Pepper Sauce (optional)
  • Smoked sea salt or Tajin (optional)
  • Celery, olives, etc. for garnish
  • Ice

Directions

  1. Rub rim of glass with lime juice and roll in salt or Tajin (optional)
  2. Mix light beer with Bloody Mary Mix, shake over ice
  3. Pour over ice in a tall tumbler, add fresh lime juice and Pepper Sauce to taste. Finish with garnish and enjoy!
