Iconic Cocktails Collection:
The Espresso Martini
A decadent after-dinner drink, the espresso martini is both dignified and somehow lively. It’s a creamy and frothy concoction that can feel like an elevated version of a dessert milkshake, but for adults. The rich notes of espresso are balanced by the subtly sweet flavors of vanilla, burnt sugar, and hints of caramel, creating a delicious cocktail layered with the ideal combination of chocolate and coffee.
Rumored to have first been served at the sophisticated, swanky, and trendy Soho Brasserie in London in the mid-80s as a special request for a cocktail that had stimulating properties. First known as a Vodka Espresso, this creamy concoction was later coined the Espresso Martini, a nod to its caffeinated properties, as well as a recognition of its overwhelming flavor characteristics.
Once we discovered the espresso martinis, we simply had to try a variety of them at the restaurants and bars we visited. While we’ve had a few standout espresso martinis, along with a few that unfortunately miss the mark (you know the ones, milky in color with watered-down flavor), we’ve always desired to make our own Pappy & Company version of this cocktail that feels, tastes, and looks like luxury in a cocktail glass.
Of course, that required ideal partnerships; fortunately, we had those already in place on the bar and in the percolator. Delivering on the espresso martini of our dreams, one that was brewing for quite some time, until we perfected the recipe with the balanced flavor notes of our Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon Barrel-Aged Coffee made in partnership with Good Folks Coffee, and our cocktail partner Bittermilk.
Simply pairing one (1) part of our Pappy Van Winkle Barrel Aged Espresso Elixir with the instantly identifiable Pappy Van Winkle flavor notes of vanilla, buttery charred oak, and caramel, combined with rich Guatemalan coffee, and one (1) part vodka, will deliver a creamy and delicious espresso martini in mere moments.

Elegant, decadent, and undeniably sexy, the espresso martini feels like something someone in a James Bond movie would order. Layers of flavor, that, thanks to our Pappy Van Winkle Elixir, aren’t even remotely complicated, combine to concoct a creamy and desirable cocktail that should be sipped in a dark corner.
Boasting bold, intense espresso flavor that is somehow deep and rich, yet frothy and light, with notes of Pappy Van Winkle barrel-aged sweetly charred butter, velvety caramel, and creamy vanilla, and undertones of burnt sugar.
For the final touch, add three whole Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon Barrel-Aged Coffee Beans on top of the espresso martini before serving. The three beans are meant to symbolize health, wealth, and happiness. In a seemingly decidedly Italian twist, this espresso martini flair is inspired by the Italian tradition of inviting good fortune and prosperity with the placement of three coffee beans on Sambuca. We certainly won’t argue with any tradition based on the intention of sharing good luck.
Naturally, we enjoy the symbolism of the three beans for another reason. As with all of our recipes, Pappy Van Winkle bourbon barrel-aged gourmet creations, and Pappy Van Winkle barrel-crafted accessories, we permeate all aspects of our collections with the legacy of Pappy Van Winkle’s legendary hospitality, as represented by our Pappy & Company logo, consisting of three keys.
Set up an Espresso Martini station for your guests, on our Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon Barrel Stave Tray, crafted from retired Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon Barrels, with their signature markings and unique char marks, evidence of the recently completed aging that share their role in Bourbon history.
