Pappyland: A Story of Family, Fine Bourbon, and the Things That Last.
When the award-winning journalist Wright Thompson approached our dad Julian Van Winkle about telling his story—how Dad set out to save our family’s storied bourbon legacy...one barrel at a time—he didn't quite realize what he’d signed up for. He'll be the first to admit, he’s not a natural talker, but Thompson amplified his voice and spun Dad’s truth-is-stranger-than-fiction tale with authenticity and soul. It’s a book our family will cherish for generations, and we hope the bourbon lovers in yours will, too.
Please note the pages of this book are designed with a rough cut or "deckle edge," meant to mimic uncut paper for a more genuinely antiquarian feel. Much like the story you will find inside these pages, this element begets a sense of true authenticity.

Good story
Great book, a story worth reading
Cool product!
Wonderful book and signed too!
Easy, engaging quick read. Good stories and insight into the story of Pappy. Loved the story when the author and JVW visit the Bar at the Executive West and are lectured on how to order a Pappy...
The paper of the book was very poorly trimmed. The unbound side of the book looks like a mouse chewed on it. Each "bundle" of sheets is good on the bound side, the open side is very very poor quality. Unfortunately, this was my signed copy.
Present and one for a Bourbon basket I donate every year to a nonprofit organization silent auction. DC Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation which I am Director of Development and Fund Raising Volunteer. This year the basket donated grossed $1,000.00. No Pappy Van Winkle in it. But I thought this book autographed will be a great addition.
What a great book. A lot of information I wasn’t aware of. Easy read also
Wright does a job comparing his "upbringing" in relationship to how Julian was raised and proceeded to become his own man

Always a great product and love the history. I only wish living here in Massachusetts I could find more Pappy Bourbon.
And wonderful writing. The interweaving of stories was good. I never thought a book about Bourbon would touch my emotions, but it did!
Excellent story of the American dream based on bourbon. I have read it three times
Pappyland: A Story of Family, Fine Bourbon, and the Things That Last. Signed Edition.
This is the perfect gift for the bourbon lover in your life! The best part is that it is signed by a family member. I can't wait to give it as a gift this Christmas!
Ordering was easy and quick delivery.
Really enjoyed the book. Being from Louisville I can appreciate it more than most. It also helped explain how complicated the industry really is. Drink what you like and share it with your friends.
This book gives in depth information on the family behind the best bourbon in America! Wright Thompson has done a superb job portraying the ups, downs, ins, and outs of the bourbon industry while at the same time giving us insights into the Van Winkle family. He asks the questions of Julian we all seem to want to want answered about our own family and friendship situations, and ends up coming to grips with how he wants his own relationships to grow and develop. All this woven around the bourbon industry in that special Kentucky area know affectionately as Pappyland. The book has inspired me to visit my brother and wife who just moved to Lexington, and spend several days touring the sites in the book as well as all the distilleries mentioned, plus others. I am looking forward to tasting fine bourbon!
Pappyland represents the unique opportunity to peek inside the whiskey business as few outsiders ever really experience. Having spent 45 years in the wholesale beverage industry and meeting Julian over 30 years ago, the book confirmed a few things I always believed to be true. First and foremost, the business of making, marketing and selling fine Bourbon is not only full of intrigue, heartbreak and euphoric highs, it also spawned many successful companies with foundations built by, and on strong families. All this captured perfectly in Wright Thompson’s work. He is not only brilliant in his ability to capture the essence of a true piece of American history and culture but shares with us many personal experiences and feelings creating a bond between author and reader. Also true was the portrait Thompson fashions of Julian himself. It proves what I’ve also always known to be fact. Family, faith, hard work and determination are important keys to success. A great read for lovers of the South, the American dream and of course, Bourbon!
A bookworm I am not...... I am however a student of fine bourbon. I want to thank my brother-in-law for an awesome Christmas present. I literally couldn’t put the book down. Wright Thompson does an excellent job in recounting the history of the Van Winkle family. He also intertwines his own family experiences which compliments both him and Julian’ s family. Mr. Thompson is also a resident of Oxford, MS. He mentions several places in Oxford that we have come to know and love over the years while two of our children attended Ole Miss. A highly recommended read even if you are not a novice fan of fine bourbon. A must read for any bourbon aficionado!
A fine book that uses bourbon and the history of the Van Winkles to explore how family and the past shape our futures. Great for the bourbon enthusiast as well as for others just casually strolling past the bluegrass.
I have just started to read this amazing life lesson book!
Once you pick it up it’s hard to break away! Awesome and the author is so good at his ability to make you think you are right there with them!
This website got my attention a while back because I figure I look good in a t-shirt that's half off.
I'm only 27 pages into this book, and I'm seriously impressed. It's a book about Kentucky, bourbon, horse racing and Julian's life. I am finding this all very informative, and it's also a book about family. It's also a book with no filler. I find myself carefully reading each sentence, because each one is lovingly hand-crafted, incredibly well-constructed, and just a joy to read.
It was not unreasonably priced, other than the $8+ shipping charges. :-) Other than that, it costs no more than a higher end daily drinker. So far, this seems to be one of those rare books that I will start re-reading within a week of finishing the book, in order to see what I missed and to revisit the best parts. Buy this book.
