Tell me about your Louisville flagship store.

We opened our first retail space in our hometown of Louisville, KY in 2019. Like most things at Pappy & Company, the space began as a family vision — with the help of our dad, Julian Van Winkle III.

We all knew there was an opportunity to find a location that could work as a multi-functional space to support our needs as a multi-faceted business: warehouse, office, retail store, and event space. The building also holds our sister’s interior design business, Chenault James Interiors.

Stop in Thursday through Sunday during open hours to shop the collection, see our barrel goods up close, and say hello.

Orders & Shipping

Track an order, shipping rates, heat-sensitive shipping, delivery times.

What is your shipping cutoff?

Orders placed before 2:00 PM ET, Monday–Friday ship the same business day. Orders placed after 2pm Friday ship the following Monday.

UPS does not classify Saturday or Sunday as a business day, so transit time skips the weekend.

How long does shipping take?

After your order ships, transit time depends on the service you selected at checkout:

  • Standard Ground (UPS) — typically 2–5 business days, depending on distance from Louisville, KY.
  • 2nd Day Air — 2 business days from ship date.
  • Next Day Air — 1 business day from ship date.

Heat-sensitive products (chocolate, certain food items) may ship with cold packs or with a delayed ship date during summer months. We'll never ship something that won't arrive in good shape — if a delay is needed, we'll email you.

Where's my order?

Once we ship your order you'll receive a tracking email from UPS or USPS. You can also find tracking links on your account orders page.

If tracking shows "delivered" but you don't have the package, give it one to two business days — early delivery scans are common with both carriers. Then:

  1. Check with neighbors in case it was left next door.
  2. Look for less-obvious drop spots (side porch, back door, behind planters).
  3. Call your local UPS or USPS branch with the tracking number — they can pull the exact GPS scan location.

Once an order leaves our warehouse, we lose visibility into transit, but our support team is happy to help if a package goes truly missing. Email customerservice@pappyco.com with your order number.

Can I change my shipping address after I order?

If your order hasn't shipped yet, email customerservice@pappyco.com with your order number and the new address. We'll update it if we can catch it in time.

Once an order has shipped, we can't reroute it. But UPS offers UPS MyChoice, a free service that lets you redirect home deliveries, hold a package at a UPS Access Point, or change the delivery date. Sign up for UPS MyChoice.

Why is shipping more expensive for cigars?

Tobacco shipping costs more than the rest of our products because of two real costs we can't absorb yet:

  • $1.29 per order for age verification.
  • 30% of our cigar orders ship to states that require adult signature on delivery, which adds about $7 per order in UPS fees.

That's why tobacco products are excluded from our free shipping promotions and from the $10 flat-rate threshold. We'd love to bring them into the fold, and may be able to as we grow. For now, this is a small-team reality.

What happens if no one's home to sign for my cigar order?

UPS will attempt delivery up to three times. If no adult 21 or older is available to sign on the third attempt, the package returns to us. We'll email you when it arrives back and offer two options:

  1. Reship — to the same or a different address.
  2. Refund — minus the original shipping cost.

To avoid this, ship cigars to a location where someone over 21 will be present during the day (a workplace works well), or use UPS MyChoice to select a UPS Access Point.

Do you ship to PO Boxes, APO/FPO, or internationally?
  • PO Boxes — yes for most products via USPS. Some heavy/oversized items require a street address (we'll email if there's a conflict).
  • APO / FPO / DPO — yes for shelf-stable items. We're proud to support service members and their families.
  • International — Pappy & Co ships to all countries except Mexico, Russia, the UK, and other restricted areas. Cigars and tobacco are no longer shipped internationally due to rising duties and taxes.
Which states can you ship tobacco to?

Due to state laws, we cannot ship cigars or any tobacco product to Hawaii, South Dakota, or Utah. We can ship tobacco to every other US state, but every tobacco shipment requires an adult signature on delivery from someone 21 or older — no exceptions.

If you place a cigar order with a delivery address in one of the restricted states, we'll reach out before the order ships to either substitute a non-tobacco item or refund the affected line.

My order was sent to a UPS Access Point and never picked up. What now?

UPS holds Access Point packages for 7 calendar days by default. After that, the package is returned to us.

If you've been notified your package is at an Access Point and you can't pick it up before that window closes, contact us at customerservice@pappyco.com — we can sometimes coordinate with UPS to extend the hold, but not always.

The UPS Access Point I chose at checkout is no longer available.

This happens occasionally when a location closes or temporarily stops accepting Access Point packages. Email us with your order number and an alternate address (home, work, or another Access Point) and we'll update your shipment before it goes out.

Returns & Refunds

Damaged items, return windows, refund timing, exchanges.

What is your return policy?

We accept returns and exchanges on full-price items within 30 days of receipt, provided the product meets all of the following:

  • In good quality, in the original packaging
  • Unworn
  • Unused
  • Seal unbroken

Items we cannot accept returns on:

  • Sale itemsALL SALE ITEMS ARE FINAL SALE. No returns or exchanges.
  • Bourbon balls — non-returnable due to health compliance laws.
  • Any product that has been opened, used, damaged, or worn after receipt.
  • Handmade barrel products — natural variation in color and grain is normal and is not grounds for return without prior approval from a Pappy & Co customer service representative.
  • Cigars/tobacco beyond the 7-day window — see the dedicated article below.

To start a return, fill out the Return Request Form or email customerservice@pappyco.com with your full name, order number, and the item(s) you'd like to return. We respond within 48 business hours with next steps. Once approved, we'll provide shipping details.

Return-by-preference shipping: If you'd like to return an item based on personal preference (not damage or defect), the customer is responsible for the cost of the return label.

Send returns to:

Pappy & Company
Attn: Returns and Exchanges

Louisville, KY 40206

Don't have your order number? Was it a gift? We can issue a gift card if you can provide the gift giver's information.

My order arrived damaged, is missing items, or contains the wrong item.

We'll work with you to fix it as quickly as possible. Email customerservice@pappyco.com with:

  1. Your full name
  2. Order number
  3. Item(s) that are missing, damaged, or incorrect (a photo helps)

We'll replace, refund, or issue store credit — your call.

Can I return cigars?

Yes, but with a much tighter window than the rest of the catalog.

Our cigars arrive sealed and shrink-wrapped in cellophane. We can only accept returns or exchanges on cigars if the box is sealed and unopened, and the return must be sent back within 7 days of receipt (not 30 days like other items).

Opened cigar boxes are non-returnable for FDA and state regulatory reasons.

If a specific cigar smoked poorly, see "One of my cigars was damaged or didn't smoke well" below — quality complaints route through Drew Estate, not the standard return process.

My barrelhead looks "weathered." Is something wrong with it?

No — these are authentic, retired Pappy Van Winkle bourbon barrelheads. Each one was inside an active bourbon barrel for 10–23 years before becoming a Pappy & Co piece, and they show their history.

Expect:

  • Natural drying and slight shrinkage of the wood.
  • Variation in color, char depth, and grain.
  • Occasional small imperfections, knots, or pitting.

These aren't defects — they're what makes each piece one of a kind. The barrelhead you receive is the only one exactly like it in the world.

Per our refund policy, natural variation in handmade barrel products is not grounds for return without prior approval from a Pappy & Co customer service representative.

My cigar box seal was cut or broken when it arrived.

That's almost certainly from US Customs inspection in Miami, where all cigars entering the country are physically inspected. Customs cuts the outer seal to inspect the contents, then reseals the box and forwards it on.

The cigars themselves are sealed and shrink-wrapped in cellophane and are untampered with. If a cigar itself appears damaged or unusable, email us a photo and we'll handle it.

One of my cigars was damaged or didn't smoke well.

We stand behind every cigar that leaves our doors. We set a high bar for quality, and if a cigar from us doesn’t meet it, we want to make it right.

Email customerservice@pappyco.com with your order number, a short description of the issue, and a photo if you have one. We’ll happily arrange a replacement so you can enjoy the experience as it was intended.

When will I see my refund?

Once we process a refund on our end, it takes:

  • 2–3 business days to appear on most credit cards.
  • 5–7 business days for some banks and debit cards.
  • 24 hours for store credit / gift card refunds.

If it's been longer than 10 business days and you don't see it, contact your bank first (we have a record of the refund on our end). If they don't have it, email us and we'll dig into the transaction.

Products

Barrel-aged maple, Old Fashioned kits, cigars, glassware, food storage.

Where can I buy Pappy Van Winkle bourbon?

Pappy & Company sells bourbon-inspired goods — apparel, glassware, gourmet food, cigars, gift sets — but we do not sell the bourbon itself. By law, the distillery (Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery) can only sell to licensed liquor distributors, who in turn decide which retailers receive bottles. We don't have any product in our hands and can't help locate a bottle.

A few honest notes:

  • Supply doesn't meet demand. Our bourbons are aged 10–23 years, so we can't simply make more today and sell it tomorrow.
  • We produce more bourbon every year, but at a pace that fits our family's quality-over-quantity values.
  • Even our family rarely sips Pappy ourselves. It's a special-occasion pour, not an everyday one.

If you're searching for a bottle, the distillery's website is the right starting point: oldripvanwinkle.com.

If you'd like a Pappy-inspired gift instead, we can help — shop our gift sets or browse our best sellers.

How do I read the date code on my Pappy bottle?

The code printed on the back of a Pappy Van Winkle bottle has three parts:

  • Year — the last digit of the bottling year.
  • Julian date — three digits indicating the day of the year (001 = January 1; 365 = December 31).
  • Line number — the bottling line used.

So a code like 5142A1 translates to: bottled day 142 of 2025 (May 22), line A1. Note this is the bottling date — bourbon was aged for 10–23 years before that point depending on the expression.

What's in the Old Fashioned Cocktail Mix?

Our Old Fashioned Cocktail Mix is made by Bittermilk in Charleston, SC, and aged in retired Pappy Van Winkle bourbon barrels.

Ingredients: Florida golden cane sugar, water, orange peel, spices (cinnamon, clove, coriander, anise, others), gentian root, cinchona bark, tartaric acid.

Suppliers:

  • Florida Golden Cane Sugar — Florida Crystals (ASR Group)
  • Spices, orange peel, gentian, cinchona — Ascend Foods
  • Tartaric acid — Atlantic Ingredients

All ingredient suppliers are FDA-compliant and provide a Certificate of Analysis with each batch. Every ingredient is all-natural — no preservatives, no stabilizers, no synthetic flavors.

Why this sugar? We previously sourced organic cane sugar from Brazil and found Brazilian quality lower than domestic. Florida Crystals is the highest-quality cane sugar available domestically. It's all-natural and Kosher-certified, though not certified organic or Fair Trade — those certifications don't currently exist for domestically grown cane.

How to use: 1.5 oz mix + 2 oz bourbon, stir over ice, garnish with orange peel.

What's in the bourbon barrel-aged maple syrup?

Pure Vermont maple syrup, aged for several months in retired Pappy Van Winkle bourbon barrels. The barrels impart a subtle vanilla-and-oak warmth without making the syrup boozy — by the time the syrup leaves the barrel, the alcohol has evaporated and what remains is flavor.

Ingredients: Grade A dark amber maple syrup, aged in Pappy Van Winkle barrels.

How to use: On pancakes, waffles, biscuits, oatmeal, ice cream, glazed bacon, glazed carrots, in cocktails (try 1/4 oz in place of simple syrup in an Old Fashioned), or drizzled on a charcuterie board.

Shelf life: Unopened, 2+ years in the pantry. Opened, refrigerate and use within 6 months for best flavor.

Alcohol content: Non-alcoholic. Safe for children, pregnancy, and recovery.

What's in the bourbon balls?

Our bourbon balls are made in Louisville, KY with Fair Trade-certified chocolate.

Ingredients: Sugar, butter, Pappy Van Winkle bourbon, pecans, Fair Trade chocolate, vanilla.

Shelf life: About 1 month at room temperature, much longer in the freezer. If you've stored them frozen, let them rest at room temperature for 15 minutes before serving so the chocolate softens.

Alcohol content: Bourbon balls are bourbon-infused, not barrel-aged, and they contain a small amount of real bourbon. Not suitable for children or for those strictly avoiding alcohol.

Returns note: Per FDA health-compliance laws, bourbon balls are non-returnable once shipped.

What's in the bourbon barrel cacao brittle?

A bourbon-and-chocolate brittle made in Nashville, TN using cacao nibs aged in retired Pappy barrels.

Ingredients: Sugar, butter, cacao nibs (aged in Pappy barrels), almonds, salt, vanilla.

Contains: dairy, tree nuts.

Alcohol content: Non-alcoholic — the cacao nibs are barrel-aged, not bourbon-infused, and any trace alcohol cooks off in production.

What's in the bourbon barrel coffee?

Beans roasted in Louisville by Good Folks Coffee.

Origin: Single-origin Guatemala, medium-dark roast.

Process: Green coffee beans are aged in retired Pappy Van Winkle barrels (moisture monitored throughout). Once aged, they go through a sample roast, then a final roast.

Shelf life: Best within about 2 months of the roast date (printed on the bag). Store airtight, away from heat and light. Don't refrigerate or freeze — coffee absorbs odors and moisture easily.

Alcohol content: Non-alcoholic. Roasting at 400°F+ removes any trace alcohol.

What's in the pepper sauce?

A small-batch hot sauce aged in retired Pappy barrels.

Ingredients: Aged ghost peppers, vinegar, water, salt, garlic, spices. Aged in Pappy Van Winkle barrels.

Heat level: Hot. Ghost peppers carry roughly 1,000,000 Scoville units, but the aging and dilution mellow it. Expect bourbon-tinged heat, not raw ghost pepper.

How do I store my cigars?

Cigars need humidity. How quickly they dry out depends on your climate — humid environments are forgiving; dry ones (heated rooms, desert climates, airplanes) are not. Store cigars in a humidor or airtight container as soon as your shipment arrives.

Without a humidor:

  1. Put your cigars in a plastic food-storage bag or sealed container.
  2. For every 25 cigars, add a damp paper towel, sponge, or a Boveda/2-way humidity pack.
  3. Store on a shelf or in a closet away from heat sources and direct sunlight.

Boveda packs are the cleanest solution — they hold a constant humidity level (typically 65% or 72% depending on your preference). We carry them on the site.

After transit: Give your cigars 3–5 days to rehydrate before smoking. They've been through temperature and humidity swings in transit and benefit from settling.

What's the difference between your Tradition and Barrel Fermented cigars?

Both are produced for us by Drew Estate in Nicaragua. We carry them as two distinct lines on the site — Tradition Cigars and Barrel Fermented Cigars.

  • Pappy Van Winkle Tradition Cigar — a classic Nicaraguan profile. 100% long-filler, premium tobacco. Medium-bodied, pairs well with bourbon and other American whiskeys.
  • Pappy Van Winkle Barrel Fermented Cigar — uses tobacco that's been Kentucky fire-cured and then fermented inside retired Pappy Van Winkle bourbon barrels using the Perique process. More complex, spicier, pairs well with rye, peated Scotch, or spicier spirits.

For deeper background on both cigars, see our cigar overview and cigar education pages.

Why don't you wholesale your cigars?

Our cigar arrangement with Drew Estate is a direct retail partnership — they distribute to wholesale buyers themselves through their own network. If you're a retailer interested in carrying our cigars, contact Drew Estate's wholesale team directly.

Pappy & Co's own wholesale program covers our food, glassware, barware, and apparel — but not cigars.

Are bourbon barrel-aged products alcoholic?

Our barrel-aged products are non-alcoholic. The maple syrup, coffee, brittle, and pepper sauce all spend time inside retired Pappy Van Winkle barrels — they pick up flavor compounds from the wood and from residual bourbon in the staves, but the alcohol itself evaporates during the aging process.

Our bourbon-infused products do contain real bourbon. That includes:

  • Bourbon balls — contain Pappy Van Winkle bourbon as a recipe ingredient.

When in doubt, read the ingredient list. "Bourbon" listed as an ingredient = bourbon is in the product. "Aged in bourbon barrels" with no bourbon listed = the product never met the bourbon directly.

Gifting

Gift sets, gift messages, gift cards, multi-recipient orders, corporate gifting.

Can I include a gift message?

Yes. At checkout, look for the "Add a gift message" option. Your message is printed on a branded card and tucked into the package — your recipient won't see pricing or invoices. There's no charge for gift messages.

We recommend keeping messages under 300 characters (about 4 lines) so they fit cleanly on the card.

Can I ship multiple gifts to different addresses on one order?

Not in a single transaction, no. Shopify requires one shipping address per order. To send gifts to multiple people:

  • Place a separate order for each recipient (you can use the same payment method).
  • Or use our corporate gifting service for 10+ gifts going to multiple addresses — we handle the spreadsheet, shipping, and gift messages on our end. See our Corporate Gifting page or email customerservice@pappyco.com.

How do gift cards work?

Pappy & Co gift cards are delivered digitally by email. The recipient gets a unique code they can redeem at checkout for any amount up to the card value. Cards don't expire and don't have monthly fees.

You can:

  • Choose any amount from $25 to $500.
  • Schedule the delivery email for a specific date (a birthday, anniversary, the morning of a holiday).
  • Add a personal message in the gift-card form.

If the recipient loses their email, we can resend it — just email us with the order number.

Do you offer corporate or bulk gifting?

Yes. See our Corporate Gifting page for the live program. Our corporate gifting team works with:

  • Companies sending gifts to clients, partners, or employees.
  • Event organizers (weddings, conferences, retreats).
  • Real estate, financial services, and law firms with regular client-gift cadence.

We can:

Yes — when you visit pappyco.com, a newsletter signup popup will offer 10% off your first order in exchange for your email address. The code arrives in your welcome email and is good for 30 days.

Why didn't my discount code apply at checkout?

A few common reasons:

  • It already expired — codes have visible expiration dates in the email/SMS they came in.
  • Single-use code already used — most promotional codes are limited to one use per customer.
  • Stacking — most codes don't stack with other promos. Pappy Rewards points are an exception.
  • Excluded items — some codes exclude gift cards, cigars, sale items, or certain limited-edition pieces. See /pages/exclusions for the live list of products not eligible for discounts.

If you tried a valid code that still didn't work, email us with your order number and the code and we'll figure it out.

I missed a sale. Can the discount be applied retroactively?

Unfortunately no — promotional codes apply only to orders placed during the active sale window. We can't retroactively discount past orders, but we'll get you in on the next one if you're on our email or SMS list.

We can only help with orders placed at pappyco.com.

Does Pappy & Co donate to charity auctions or fundraisers?

Thank you for thinking of us. Because we receive a high volume of requests every week — and because we believe in following through on every commitment we make — we're not currently able to donate product or sponsorships outside of our existing partnerships.

We deeply admire the work nonprofits do, and wish we could say yes to everyone. As a small business, we've found the most meaningful way to give back is through a small number of ongoing relationships rather than spreading thinly.

If your event would like to purchase product for a goody bag, raffle, or auction lot, please reach out about wholesale or corporate pricing: customerservice@pappyco.com, subject line "Fundraiser Purchase Inquiry."
