Savor the last slow Sunday mornings of summer with a delicious twist on a classic waffle recipe.
What signifies that Sunday morning feeling more than the appearance of a hot stack of pancakes or waffles presented alongside warm maple syrup? When you are trying to stave off the end of summer blues - a stack of fresh homemade cornmeal waffles on a Sunday morning will do just the trick.
We love to play around in the kitchen with recipes and ingredients to find new ways to make some of our tried and true favorites - I mean that is one real perk of continuing to work on our line of Pappy Van Winkle bourbon barrel-aged gourmet products! Experimenting - and of course taste testing - is really the best part! We've discovered some of our new favorite flavor combinations by just being curious and trying new things.
It's no secret that our Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon Barrel-Aged Pure Maple Syrup is an absolute favorite in our houses and that big Sunday morning breakfasts with plentiful bacon, pancakes or waffles are a regular occurrence (especially when we are all together and we have masses of people to feed!) so when we heard it was National Waffle Day - we decided to get creative with our normal homemade waffle recipe and try our hand at making some waffles with our Pappy Van Winkle Heirloom Cornmeal!
Made in partnership with our friends, Marsh Hen Mill, we just had a feeling that the flavor of the cornmeal, made with our Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon Barrel-Aged Pure Maple Syrup, would make for some delicious waffles. Luckily, we were right! The result was some golden brown beauties with a perfectly crispy exterior that just about begged to be topped with an extra pat of melty butter and a generous pour of syrup.
So enjoy our delicious take on homemade Cornmeal waffles, made with our heirloom cornmeal, Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon Barrel-Aged Pure Maple Syrup, buttermilk, and brown sugar for a crisp waffle with deeply rich flavors with hints of caramel, vanilla for the perfect sweet and savory combination. They just so happen to be complemented naturally by a slather of melted butter and a generous drizzle of syrup.
*AmateurChef's notes: The naturally crunchy, savory flavor and texture of cornmeal waffles lends itself to a variety of options - lean into the earthier notes and pair it with fried chicken and our Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon Barrel-Aged Spicy Syrup for a subtly sweet and spicy version of Chicken and Waffles or get creative with other additions for truly savory delights!
A delicious sweet and savory combination for homemade waffles - don't forget the extra drizzle of barrel-aged pure maple syrup!
