Cocktail Recipe: The Hemingway Daiquiri is the Perfect Summer Sip

  • 2 min read

While Pappy & Company's roots will always be in Louisville, KY, we have expanded over the years into other areas including the beloved mountain town of Sun Valley, ID where part of our team resides, including co-founder Carrie Van Winkle. Be sure to check out our last blog post where we tell you about the people and places that make Pappy & Company what it is today.

With Sun Valley, ID as our second home base we thought we would share with you one of our local cocktail recipes inspired by Earnest Hemingway who spent his final years in Sun Valley, ID. His love for the great outdoors, fishing, and hunting were only second to that of a good cocktail; and that is where the Hemingway cocktail begins.

According to local folklore, Earnest Hemingway needed a bathroom. Or so the story goes. The true origin of the Earnest Hemingway Daiquiri is still up for debate, among cocktail historians, but this much we know to be true. In passing a lineup of frosty daiquiris at the bar, in search of the loo, Hemingway wasn’t one to pass up a good cocktail but demanded the bartender make his with more alcohol and less sugar. Thus the Hemingway Daiquiri is a tarter more potent version of the sugar-loaded daiquiri most are accustomed to.

As we try to soak up and savor the last days of summer, this cocktail is a perfect way to enjoy those last poolside barbeques and warm weather nights as we see fall sneaking in just around the corner. In this version, we use our Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon Barrel Aged Pure Maple Syrup as a substitute for simple syrup and have also used Orasella Maraschino Cherries which we prefer to the overly sweetened artificial cherries you find more commonly used. The Orasella Maraschino cherries made and produced in Washington use local cherries harvested by hand.

So if you can manage one more outdoor alfresco Pappy Hour, we highly recommend you try this cocktail that is sure to pack a real punch as Hemingway would have had it no other way.

Ingredients:

Directions:

  • Pour all ingredients into a shaker with ice cubes and shake vigorously.
  • Pour into a martini glass or small rocks glass and serve straight up.
  • Add the cherry on a toothpick for garnish.
  • We like to use these Pappy & Company Keys Glasses as they are the perfect size and easier for sipping than a martini glass.
